We love your show! My 11 year old daughter is a big fan of The Beatles. She broke her leg last week and has been feeling bad. Can you play a song for her... her favorite "All my Loving" ? Thanks!
HOST RESPONSE: Consider it done.

This week's show with Ray Manzarek is a good one. He hit the nail on the head When you you guys were talking about concerts were so wild, and how fun they were. And now they're so controlled, it isn't as fun, and more expensive. This leads to my next comment. I saw Ringo and his All-Starr Band last time they were in town. Colin Hayes from MEN AT WORK fame was up doing his segment of the show. A guy in the crowd got up and started dancing. A crowd control attendant came over to tell him to sit down. Colin stopped playing and asked the crowd control guy why he made the concert goer stop dancing and sit down. Colin said after all that's what were all here for, right? Actually Colin was really upset about this so much, Ringo came onstage to calm him down. But I agree with Colin. Were there to enjoy the music and have fun singing along and dance. I wrote the management of the venue to complain about the crowd control issue. They got an earfull! But I never received a reply. It's sad that concerts are so controlled. And expensive! The average nosebleed ticket is $75 or higher!!!

Request: I was wondering if there is any way to get any or all of the Christmas songs or singles or albums that were made back when. I have not heard so many of them. I REALLY REALLY enjoy listening to your show every weekend. I set my alarm on Sat & Sun so I can be sure to hear it. You are on 98.1 and 102.5. Thank you so much!
HOST RESPONSE: The Christmas recordings can be found through auction sites, but buyer beware. They are among the most heavily pirated of all Beatles recordings, though there are some pretty good quality knockoffs out there. The original albums and flexi-discs are still quite collectible and likely to be pretty expensive if in good condition.

I have a copy of John Lennon singing a son called "India". can you tell me anything about it?
HOST RESPONSE: It is a lovely tune that John recorded as a demo at the Dakota in the late 1970s. I'm hoping it will turn up on a future compilation.

Congrats on the great work keeping the Beatles flame burning - terrific stuff. Thought you might enjoy some of my work as 'John' in a one man tribute show based here in Australia called LENNON ONLY. Here's a link to my YouTube Channel - hope you 'dig it'! http://www.youtube.com/user/Lennononly - Best wishes from 'across the water'!

First of all, you are the most enthusiastic jock I have heard on the radio. You sound so genuine. I can feel the passion of not only the Beatles, but just for music in general, and that is extremely rare these days. So thank you, because I love the Beatles and just real good music myself. I listen to BWTB on your website, not on the radio due to poor reception. I have asked KGON 92.3 FM to air BWTB, but to no avail. Thanks Dennis. I love your passion for the Beatles and music. Thanks for your time.

Dennis, listening to the show with the "Pawn Stars." I can tell you I saw many of the stacking Beatles dolls you featured on the Arbat in Moscow. I didn't buy one at the time. But they are not rare, you can pick them up at several different places around Moscow, and not for more than $10. They are sold at little tables by little old ladies, along with all kinds of others. (I got one of Tsar Nicholas II, the last tsar, and his wife and children.) Second Kiev (Kyiv in Ukrainian), is in Ukraine, not Russia. Don't let my wife hear you call Kyiv as being in Russia. It would be like calling a Scot or Irishman, English, and watch them come unglued, telling you they damn sure are not English. Many Ukrainians don't hold fond memories of when Russia/Soviet Union controled Ukraine.

Message from the host: We are very pleased to announce that the radio version of the show is expanding to two hours beginning the weekend of May 15-16. This marks a return to the program's original length when it premiered on local radio in Las Vegas 19 years ago. We'll be updating the Affiliates list shortly to reflect those stations that will carry the two-hour version. If your station isn't listed, call them up or e-mail them and politely let them know you'd like all two hours of BWTB. For the time being, the web version will continue to reflect a re-feed of the one-hour version. Thanks for your support over the years. I hope you'll enjoy the new two-hour BWTB!

I recently bought a 2009 CD by Gerry Rafferty (of Baker Street fame), called "Life Goes On." It culls many Rafferty tracks from the last 15 years or so, when he's mostly been out of the limelight. It has a number of great tracks, including a cover of the Beatles "Because." Perhaps you weren't aware of this version, but if you get the chance, please seek it out and play sometime on your show.
REPLY: Thanks for the request, Tim, let me see what I can do.

I have been a Beatles fan since 1964. I saw them live at Indy in '64. Went to Liverpool two years ago and met Sam Leach and Alan Williams. I have met Louise Harrison and her band Liverpool Legends. Last summer we were in Vegas and saw LOVE at the Mirage. I have a Beatles room in my house. Need I say I'm hooked?

Hi,Dennis! I enjoy your show immensely and I listen every Sunday morning at 10 on CKWW in Detroit-Windsor Ontario. The Hotrats' cover of "Drive My Car" was very good. There's another cut I've heard by them as well. They did the Beastie Boys'"Fight For Your Right To Party" in the style The Who in their mod days, circa 1967. 580AM is replaying your Beatles Breakup special tonight, so I'll tune in and listen.

The first song I ever heard of the Beatles was "Hey Jude" on 106.3 KLOO-FM during Breakfast With The Beatles and I've loved the Beatles ever since. My parents think it's odd that their 16 year old listens to music that's before their time but I love it. I just also wanted to let you know you're spreading Beatlemania to new generations. Thanks Dennis!

Does anyone know anything at all about the new song "Yoko Dear?" The artist is Eddie Davenport of New York. I heard it for the first time in January at the Fox Hollow and was blown away by it. Looking for any info whatsoever on the song or the artist. Thanks for a really great show. Breakfast With The Beatles is top shelf.

Dennis, thanks for a wonderful show. I've been a Beatles fan since 1965. I was 4 years old and I remember listening to "Meet the Beatles" and the love affair began then and there. The four Beatles don't get the recognition that's deserved in regards to their musicianship. All four were or are very good musicians. It's wonderful that both Paul and Ringo are still creating good and vital music; they aren't just older performers that are coasting on thier past.

As if we weren't crazy enough to be doing three Examiner columns (you know we're also the Vintage Rock 'n' Roll and TV on DVD Examiners, right?), we've taken on a fourth. And it's another Beatles column. It's actually about A BEATLE. Yes, we're now also the Paul McCartney Examiner as well as the Beatles Examiner.
Why, you ask? Because his story, from the '60s to now, is one amazing thing after another. And because we've had so much fun doing this Beatles Examiner column, we think we're the one to tell it. We hope you agree. The first column is online. We've heard from people who have read it that they liked it. We hope you also enjoy it and subscribe to our new Examiner column (and our Beatles column, if you haven't already). It'll be more of the Beatle news and fun you'll expect, but it'll be Paul 24/7. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

BLOG: Happy Holidays!
Welcome to the holidays! We've been keeping very busy with a number of projects that will make the show even more fun and informative. I've just finished transferring the complete British UK catalog in vinyl, from one of those big blue EMI box sets that circulated in the 1980s as "The Beatles Collection." You'll be hearing these quite-different sounding versions of your favorite Beatles tunes during future shows. Many thanks to friend and listener Greg Hampton.

We're gearing up for the holidays, and starting next weekend we'll be featuring those fun Fan Club Christmas recordings, starting with the very first one from 1963. Preparations are under way for the 2009 year-end review, which will feature special guest Steve Marinucci. It's been an incredible year in the Beatles universe, so if there are any topics that stand out for you, or that you'd like to hear discussed on that show, drop a line and let me know. Likewise, we welcome suggestions for themes and guests for 2010.

Keep checking the Contest page! We're currently running a t-shirt contest with the Fest for Beatles Fans, and soon we'll reveal the details of our biggest holiday contest ever. Finally, we'd like to welcome our newest affiliate, KRWZ, "Cruisin' Oldies" in Denver. Great to be back on in the mile-high city, and we thank all our listeners there who stayed with us by listening online.

That's it for now. Keep those cards and e-mails coming!

Message: Your weekly show is outstanding. My earliest Beatle memory is listening to "Meet The Beatles"in my aunt's living room back in 1965 when i was 4 years old. I was instantly hooked. I can truly say that there are just a few Beatles songs that i dislike. I've got a suggestion for an upcoming show.how's about doing a show where you play nothing but cover versions of beatle songs from other artists and bands. Some of these cover songs were big hits as well. It also wouldn't be too difficult to find a bunch of these songs. You should also try to arrange an interview with either Neil Innes, Eric Idle or Gary Weiss and talk about The Rutles and play some of that stuff too. That stuff still makes me laugh after all these years. the music for that was done well too. I do know that george harrison was a good sport about this and did a brief role in the film. It was hilarious. I'm also enjoying the new mono remixes of the Sgt. Pepper material.

The event is being held at the downtown Stamford Holiday Inn November 28 and 29. Tickets and more info can be found here. And, Woody Lifton has organized a star-studded "Beatles Tribute Cruise" that departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 28. May Pang, author Chris O'Dell, Beatles artist Shannon and my friend "Beatle Brunch" host Joe Johnson, are among the guests. There will be live music, trivia and all kinds of Beatles-related fun as you cruise to Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. Click here for details and to reserve your cabin.

Message: On Stuart's idea, I had a long time fansatsy like if I was George Martin and the Beatles came to me with the White Album tapes. I would also put together a one disk of best of the best. Then I would use the other songs as delightfully odd flip-sides for the 45s. The singles would gave probably sold about as well as they did, but there would be more of them. Then, after a couple of years of them, put all the flip-sides on one album.

News item: The performance of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr together last April will be released on CD and DVD, according to longtime Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick. In a wide-ranging interview to be broadcast on an upcoming edition of "Dennis Mitchell's Breakfast With The Beatles," Emerick confirmed that he will be spending time in New York in the coming weeks to work on preparing the show for audio and video release.

The "Change Begins Within" concert was held April 4 at New York's famed Radio City Music Hall as a benefit for film director David Lynch's Foundation, which promotes the use of meditation beginning with schoolchildren. No word on when the CD and/or DVD will be available.

Update from your host: CONGRATULATIONS to David Miller, our Grand Prize Winner in the "Eight Days a Week" contest. David chose the personalized Beatles gold album plaque and the mono remasters box set as his prize. Our Second Prize winner is Steve Shaw, who chose "The Beatles: Rock Band" Limited Edition Premimum Bundle. Gregory Pyatt wins Third Prize, the stereo remasters box set. As of this writing we're still waiting to hear from the Fourth Prize winner, who will get the beautiful Box of Vision CD display accessory. Remember, everyone else who entered will be entered in a secondary drawing for CDs from the stereo remasters collection, "Rock Band" software and commemorative posters. Thanks one and all for playing!

Message: A few conclusions from the stereo remasters:
1. Early albums benefit the most. Please Please Me sounds dynamite.
2. Don't mess with originals. The Anthology and Love projects are truly inferior.
3. White Album over-rated. There are as many as 10 cuts like Bungalow Bill and Rocky Raccoon that should have been tossed. Would be a great single album.

BLOG: Happy Beatles Day!
We have finally arrived at a day created by marketing, but that no Beatles fan I know of has shunned or dismissed as crass or improper. We got word last winter that the band’s digitally remastered catalogue would be released in September, and then came word of "The Beatles: Rock Band," and as the buzz grew louder, 09-09-09 evolved into "Beatles Day."

And why not? In a world with so many worried about so much, why can’t we pause to (again) celebrate our admiration and gratitude for the entertainment The Beatles have provided us over the years? As different types of media explode around us, leaving our conventional methods of gaining information and entertainment in the analog dust, it’s so good to be able to touch base with what got many of us here and was so fulfilling along the way.

Not that we need an excuse, but Capitol/EMI have provided a fine one, the first-ever digital remastering of The Beatles’ entire original UK catalog in stereo and mono on CD. The levels have been noticeably increased and flaws in the recordings removed or otherwise fixed. We had somewhat a sneak-preview with "The Capitol Albums" box sets, a great experience in hearing the American mixes and masters, though the publicity suggests the process may have been even more meticulous when it came to the Abbey Road masters. And the "Capitol" set ends at "Rubber Soul," which left everything from late 1965 forward still unchanged since the original CD releases began in 1987.

Until now. In a sweeping and breathtaking technological feat, engineers at EMI have provided new clarity and a new standard for digital preservation. To hear these newly-remastered recordings can be almost as enthralling as the first time you ever heard them, because you can actually hear more now than you could then. You’ve no doubt read the many examples from advance listenings: John’s near-shredded vocal cords on "Twist and Shout," the fixed guitar dropout in "Day Tripper," the great joy of hearing those odd-sounding different versions of songs that appeared on "The Beatles" (the white album), and the downright amazing mono version of "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band." It has been no small wonder to watch fans from everywhere bursting with anticipation over getting their hands on these "new" Beatles albums. It is no different at all from the feeling we got waiting in line at the record store the day "Rubber Soul" came out for the first time.

Another cause for celebration is the modernization of The Beatles’ legacy by way of a very cleverly thought-out video game that allows players to score points by mimicking the group’s musicianship and advancing through the various stages of their career. "The Beatles: Rock Band" has sent a frenzy through the world of gamers, with the advance reviews almost unanimously glowing. The entities representing the four Beatles knew a good thing when they saw it. This won’t just recruit new legions of middle-aged gamers, it’s already got longtime fans salivating over secretly-embedded previously unreleased content that includes the group’s legendary fan club Christmas recordings. A red-letter day, indeed.

So it goes in the universe of Beatles fans. With "The Beatles: Rock Band" and some of the remasters we are hearing material we hadn’t heard or known to appreciate before, and now speculation is already running rampant about which priceless unheard or unseen Beatles item will be made available next. It shall go on long after we’re all gone, of course, but I’ll bet sometime in the summer of 2221, when every single last speck of everything ever uttered by any of the four Beatles has been found, re-found, remastered, mixed, mashed and modernized again and again...music fans won’t have any trouble finding a reason to celebrate it all over again.

Message: How do you enter the contest? Do you e-mail it to the website? Or do you leave on the message page?
Host response:
Nope. All you do at this point is write down the names of the album titles so that you can submit them in the same order as they appeared on the website, when the entry form appears on September 14.

BLOG: The "new" Sgt. Pepper in mono...Wow.
I know, you Beatles fans have been hearing plenty about how great the remasters series is going to be. Well, I'm not here to dispel any of that, and in fact I must chime in with those who have heard the newly-remastered "Sgt. Pepper" album in mono, and are collectively knocked out.
This upgrade and special treatment of the legendary album assures its place among the greatest monaural music recordings in history. I found myself asking repeatedly how in the world a mono recording could possibly have this much dimension, have so much going on that is so clear and enjoyable at once. It's an album we've all heard countless times, and I've had an import copy of the mono CD for quite some time. But as was the case with the original 1987-1990 EMI releases, the levels on that disc left a lot to be desired and because of that, the novelty was limited to hearing clearer renditions of those obvious differences between the original mono and stereo versions.

But this...This new version almost challenges you to find anything that's been misplaced or covered over, while allowing you to explore what an extremely complex and perfectly-balanced mono recording sounds like. For the fans of the technical side of The Beatles' recordings, this is the motherlode. For those fans who go to that part of themselves where they experienced the songs and their potential meanings for the first time, this just makes that experience all the more emotional and enthralling.

Ringo's parts on "Fixing a Hole" are another example of something I've detected throughout listening to random tracks from the stereo and mono box sets. That something, is Ringo. Whether the remastering process resulted in ever-so-slightly higher levels for his parts, I found myself time and time again paying attention to them, where I hadn't necessarily before. Not in a distracting way by any means, but in a more fullfilling, sum-of-all-the-parts way. This is also especially true of the mono recordings, but Ringo comes across more crisp and present on the stereo albums as well, from the tracks I've sampled so far. I had never appreciated how he makes it seem like it's raining cymbals on "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," and I caught myself marveling time and again at how much more involved he was in the way the songs sounded than a lot of people may have realized.

If you've already ordered your box sets or are going to, and you're not the fastidious first-to-last-in-order type, I might suggest that you just skip ahead, slip on those headphones or flip on the home entertainment system, and enjoy "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in mono. More amazing than ever, and that's saying a lot.

Message: About the "Carnival of Light" clips, my favorite (clip #2, ending with major key chords on the organ) I suspect to be a fake because it had something sounding like John's scream "NOW!", like it was copied from the Christmas 1964 record; [John] "...and I'll hand you to George who will speak to you - NOW!"

Message: When the White Album came out, I was living in Rapid City, South Dakota, and was looking forward to the next album by the Beatles; but was shocked by the price at my usual record store. So I checked out the other stores in town, and it was all the same. Maybe all the record store owners wanted to punish the Beatles for the line "...Black Mountain hills..." in Rocky Raccoon; but if they did, nobody 'broke ranks' and changed to a decent price. When I actually bought the White Album several years later, it was in either Ark. or across the river in Memphis.

Message: Robert in Las Vegas, $21.00 to $28.00 for the White Album back in 1968? It was around $6.00 when I bought it on the day of release which was November 25, 1968. I think someone was trying to make a dishonest buck but it sure wasn't the Beatles!

Name: Robert, Las Vegas NV
Date: Sunday, November 30, 2008
Message: Dennis, the last three shows (#906-908), encompassing the White Album were exceptional, even considering your usual high quality work. This is not coming from a fan of the White Album, quite the opposite; if there was one thing that irritated me about the Beatles, it was the White Album. First there was the cost; at a time when the average LP cost $2.67 and a double album was going for about $6, all the record stores were pricing the White Album between $21 to $28. I knew that their boutique was a financial mess and the critics hated the "Mystery Tour" TV movie, but the price of the White Album seemed like they were putting the burden on their fans, High School kids like you and I were at the time, kids who mostly didn't have that kind of money. I had a buddy whose parents, like Bruce Spizer's parents, gave him the White Album as a Christmas present. That was how I first heard many of the songs. Second, like Ken Mansfield, I felt it didn't have the quality of a Beatles album where every track was perfect (like Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt Pepper). There were great songs on it, to be sure, but there were also a lot of songs that seemed like material for B-sides of singles. Over the years I've come to enjoy the entire work, but not at the time. I did have a fantasy of a one-disk White Album would be heavy on the George but light on the John material, something like this: [side 1] Back in the USSR / Dear Prudence / Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da / Martha My Dear / Blackbird / While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Can You Take Me Back (from Cry Baby Cry) --- [side 2] Don't Pass Me By / Savoy Truffle / Julia / Mother Nature's Son / Long, Long, Long / Revolution 1 / Good Night. The interview from 1963 (!) where Ringo was talking about "Don't Pass Me By" was amazing.
