WEBSITE ALERT: Exciting news! Starting today, you will be able to listen to and/or download the entire show as a podcast through a portal here at the website that has been made available by our good friends at Error FM in Sweden. It is built in such a way that you shouldn't need to download any particular player or additional software to enjoy the show, so long as your flash and java settings are up to date. The new platform also includes RSS accessibility and makes the show playable on virtually any mobile device or browser. Because of radio syndication considerations, the newest show will be posted late Sunday mornings Pacific Time, and those of you on the Weekly Reminder list will be receiving your e-mail a little later than before. There is a moderate expense involved in offering the podcast, so I hope you'll consider a donation to help offset that cost. Thank you! And thanks to Barry and Meatie at Error FM.

HOST BLOG: I'm most pleased to (FINALLY) announce that my show has been added to the outstanding lineup of radio programs at United Stations Radio Network. This is a major step forward and I'd like to thank each and every one of you who helped make it happen by listening every week. The cool staff at USRN are already busy looking for new affiliates and placing the program on Classic Rock, Classic Hits and Oldies stations. If you're in a town where the show isn't featured, now would be the time to contact your favorite station and ask the management (politely) if they'd like to be a part of the fun. Thanks once again for your support, kindness and love of The Beatles' music through the years.

Date: Sunday, November 20, 2011
PROGRAM ALERT: This week my guest is artist Shannon MacDonald, a popular guest at Beatles conventions and art events. We’ll talk about her artwork on the covers of Jude Kessler Sutherland's books, and her music career. Plus, a fun look at the connection between the Smothers Brothers and The Beatles, since it’s Dick’s 72nd birthday. You can catch the first hour of the show by clicking the "Listen Now" tab on the left.

HOST BLOG: What a thrill it was to speak to Yoko Ono on the 40th anniversary of the release of "Imagine." Thanks for the nice e-mails. I've always considered it one of the most important and influential albums ever, and it was great fun to have the co-producer herself on the show. Keep checking the website, as we continue to build a platform that will allow you to download the show in podcast form and access some past episodes. Your donations are a big help. We're about to take a big step up the radio syndication ladder, and we couldn't have done it without you listening week after week. Stay tuned for the announcement, and THANK YOU!

Date: Sunday, July 31, 2011
SCHEDULE CHANGE: As of today, the online playback of the show will be posted on Sunday mornings, usually between 8:00 and 9:00am Pacific Time. We continue to work toward archiving the show and making it available as a downloadable podcast. If you're not hearing the show on a local radio station each week, we encourage you to send a polite request to your favorite local station and tell them all about the show and this website. Thanks!

HOST BLOG:

Greetings fellow Beatlemaniacs! I'm very pleased to inform you that we're about to kick off our biggest contest ever. I've been hosting the show for over 20 years now, and have never offered a prize so cool or so valuable. And if you've followed us over the years, you know that's saying a lot. Thanks to the good folks at EMI/Capitol and so many other cool sponsors, authors and celebrities, we're always offering access to the very best information and coolest promotions imaginable for Beatles fans. This contest will be no different, except that it will feature the best prize we've ever given away. But because of the agreement we have with the main sponsor, only listeners to the radio version of the show will be eligible. So if you're not hearing the show on a local terrestrial (AM or FM) radio station each week, now would be the time to place that call or send that e-mail to your favorite local station and tell them (politely!) you want to hear "Dennis Mitchell's Breakfast With The Beatles" each weekend. Not only will you be benefitting your community, you'll be that much closer to being able to enter what promises to be a LOVE-ly contest. Oops, said too much. More soon. Stay tuned!

Loved listening to the comedic side of our musical heroes! I especially enjoyed that you closed the show with Allan Sherman's "Pop Hates The Beatles," not because I concur with his opinion but because it reminded me of my dad. I'd like to hear "Miss O'Dell" when you can fit it in.

I just wanted to thank you for this program. It's such a great show and always interesting. I have been a fan of The Beatles since '64 and George was always my favorite. I loved the show comparing Beatles and Stones fans. I also like the Stones but if I had to pick my fave? Beatles Forever! Again, thanks.

I think it's so great that you have connections to Louise Harrison and the Beatle wives. I am so glad you take the time and effort to share your knowledge and expertise with those of us that love The Beatles but really don't know all the little (& big) details of their lives and happenings. Thanks Dennis, and have a great holiday season.

HOST BLOG:

With apologies to Julian...

I was eating pistachios (red) at my tiny house near the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas and had the Monday Night Football game on, half-watching and half tending to my latest home recording project. I do believe I was transferring XTC's "Drums and Wires" album to a cassette for car listening and had just removed my headphones and started to talk with my wife, Suzan. I wasn't really listening to the TV, but found myself interrupted when Howard Cosell's words stopped my chain of thought in its tracks. "The Beatles." "Shot multiple times." "Dead on arrival." My heart sank and I wasn't really sure that's what I had heard, or at least, I couldn't comprehend it and immediately assumed it could not be true. The phone rang just a few seconds later. It was a friend from the bay area, from which we had moved to Las Vegas two years' previous, and he said "I don't believe it." I said "I heard something, but I didn't hear which one!" "It was John Lennon." And all I could say is that I didn't know what to say. So for what it's worth, that's where I was when I heard that John was gone. Through all the news coverage and mourning, I still couldn't accept that it was real, until I heard "Happy Xmas" on the radio three weeks later. Everyone has something different to trigger the emotions of that awful night 30 years ago. For me, it's that song. There was John, leaving us with yet another push for peace and it was just that much more unbearable that it happened over the holidays.

In the years since, it's been a long but mostly positive healing process for all of us. It doesn't really matter if it's a milestone birthday, such as his 70th, or the release of some new or old music, it makes me glad that he hasn't faded from the public spotlight at all. If anything, the interest in his life and his music gets stronger and more intense among fans new and old every year, without any attachment whatsoever to how his life ended.

But if I may, can we please forever dispense with referring to the cretin who murdered John as a "deranged fan?" He could not possibly have been any kind of fan at all. His aim was to become famous by killing someone famous, and his target just as easily could have been Johnny Carson or any other famous person. "Deranged?" Certainly. "Fan?" You can't be serious. Call him anything you want, just please don't call him a fan of any kind. It is simply not possible for any fan of any measure to have allowed such a thought to enter the brain, no matter how diseased that brain may be.

I purposely avoided making any mention of John's death in this week's "Breakfast With The Beatles" show. You, as the community of fans who love The Beatles, made it quite clear in October that the 70th anniversary of John's birth was a far more happy occasion worthy of celebration, as opposed to anticipating and dreading the acknowledgement of rock history's darkest day, simply because a nice round number is involved. I decided then and there that large corporate networks with a minimal connection to Beatles fans could carry that load for anyone who wants to observe the occasion that way. Me? I'm playing Beatles music as though John never left us.

And that's because John lives on, every time you see his picture or hear his music.

I would love to make a request but I never met a Beatle song I didn't like, but I rarely hear anything from"All Things Must Pass," so anything from that would be great!!! Thank You George. And Dennis for two wonderful hours every Sunday that allow me to revisit a much simpler and I think a more honest time sans "political correctness".

Hi - My name's Fran Raya and I'm a female singer/songwriter from Manchester, England. My website is a showcase for a small eclectic mix of songs with a view to others recording them. I have worked with different artists, including being support act to Eric Clapton in Scandinavia. I wrote a tribute song to John Lennon about two months after he died. It was recorded at home as a rough demo and is not the same sound quality as my other songs but it's the meaning that's more important. I've never gone public with it until now and have just uploaded it to YouTube to share with Beatle people in John's 70th year. I've added some of my artwork to go along with it. It's embedded into my website (www.franraya.com). Click on the video page and it's the the third one down. The song's called 'Hardest Part Of All'. I sure hope you like it.

Request: Hi Im a culinary student and I was doing a research project at my school about the Beatles favorite food and dishes. I found an article about a special program that was aired here called "Eat the Beatles" about all the food that is mentioned in the Beatles albums, films, etc. I created a dish based on Andy Warhol's famous Beatles painting and I wanted to share it with the web and I think you might be intrested in seeing it. I'll give you a description of the dish and the meaning of each item. To start, its a fancy version of fish and chips in honor to the UK (knowing The Beatles ended up their career as vegetarians, they werent when they started). George is the chips. Potato wedges with paprika rub, red pepper ketchup and spinach jelly. I used the jelly texture in honor of his love to the candy "jelly beans" and the pepper ketch in honor of St. Pepper (also for the color). John is the fish, panned with corn flakes "bread crumbs" because that was his favorite dish. Red wine reduction and chilled mango/mint are the sauces with a red pepper and peach relish to recreat the hair texture. And my final favorite, an onion foam resembling his glasses in honor of glass onions! Ringo is the simplest of the four, I made mole (the mexican sauce) and did an abstract painting of Ringo in the bottom of the plate as a mirror, and because of the dove he has in his hand I used a chicken leg to represent it. The color blue that is found in the painting is represented with Blue Curazao spherifications. And to finish, Paul. He is the dessert. I made an English Breakfast Tea Mousse with white chocolate. medium dice aire vaqumed apples with whiskey and a Strawberry sauce. All that along with a shot of the same tea. The light green and pale pink colors are perfect with the delicate bone color of the mousse. Apples for the Albums and Strawberries for the field!

Hi. I have a question re: The Beatles Mono box set. I purchased mine from Best Buy on 09/09/09. The discs in my box were made in Japan. Admittedly, I don't have a very good audio system, a financially challenged audiophile-very frustrating. But, I hear alot of distortion on some of the discs, especially the first 4 albums. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is there anything wrong with the Japanese discs or am I just getting too picky in my old age?

This week's show with Ray Manzarek is a good one. He hit the nail on the head When you you guys were talking about concerts were so wild, and how fun they were. And now they're so controlled, it isn't as fun, and more expensive. This leads to my next comment. I saw Ringo and his All-Starr Band last time they were in town. Colin Hayes from MEN AT WORK fame was up doing his segment of the show. A guy in the crowd got up and started dancing. A crowd control attendant came over to tell him to sit down. Colin stopped playing and asked the crowd control guy why he made the concert goer stop dancing and sit down. Colin said after all that's what were all here for, right? Actually Colin was really upset about this so much, Ringo came onstage to calm him down. But I agree with Colin. Were there to enjoy the music and have fun singing along and dance. I wrote the management of the venue to complain about the crowd control issue. They got an earfull! But I never received a reply. It's sad that concerts are so controlled. And expensive! The average nosebleed ticket is $75 or higher!!!

Request: I was wondering if there is any way to get any or all of the Christmas songs or singles or albums that were made back when. I have not heard so many of them. I REALLY REALLY enjoy listening to your show every weekend. I set my alarm on Sat & Sun so I can be sure to hear it. You are on 98.1 and 102.5. Thank you so much!
HOST RESPONSE: The Christmas recordings can be found through auction sites, but buyer beware. They are among the most heavily pirated of all Beatles recordings, though there are some pretty good quality knockoffs out there. The original albums and flexi-discs are still quite collectible and likely to be pretty expensive if in good condition.

I have a copy of John Lennon singing a son called "India". can you tell me anything about it?

First of all, you are the most enthusiastic jock I have heard on the radio. You sound so genuine. I can feel the passion of not only the Beatles, but just for music in general, and that is extremely rare these days. So thank you, because I love the Beatles and just real good music myself. I listen to BWTB on your website, not on the radio due to poor reception. I have asked KGON 92.3 FM to air BWTB, but to no avail. Thanks Dennis. I love your passion for the Beatles and music. Thanks for your time.

Dennis, listening to the show with the "Pawn Stars." I can tell you I saw many of the stacking Beatles dolls you featured on the Arbat in Moscow. I didn't buy one at the time. But they are not rare, you can pick them up at several different places around Moscow, and not for more than $10. They are sold at little tables by little old ladies, along with all kinds of others. (I got one of Tsar Nicholas II, the last tsar, and his wife and children.) Second Kiev (Kyiv in Ukrainian), is in Ukraine, not Russia. Don't let my wife hear you call Kyiv as being in Russia. It would be like calling a Scot or Irishman, English, and watch them come unglued, telling you they damn sure are not English. Many Ukrainians don't hold fond memories of when Russia/Soviet Union controled Ukraine.

Message from the host: We are very pleased to announce that the radio version of the show is expanding to two hours beginning the weekend of May 15-16. This marks a return to the program's original length when it premiered on local radio in Las Vegas 19 years ago. We'll be updating the Affiliates list shortly to reflect those stations that will carry the two-hour version. If your station isn't listed, call them up or e-mail them and politely let them know you'd like all two hours of BWTB. For the time being, the web version will continue to reflect a re-feed of the one-hour version. Thanks for your support over the years. I hope you'll enjoy the new two-hour BWTB!

I recently bought a 2009 CD by Gerry Rafferty (of Baker Street fame), called "Life Goes On." It culls many Rafferty tracks from the last 15 years or so, when he's mostly been out of the limelight. It has a number of great tracks, including a cover of the Beatles "Because." Perhaps you weren't aware of this version, but if you get the chance, please seek it out and play sometime on your show.
REPLY: Thanks for the request, Tim, let me see what I can do.

I have been a Beatles fan since 1964. I saw them live at Indy in '64. Went to Liverpool two years ago and met Sam Leach and Alan Williams. I have met Louise Harrison and her band Liverpool Legends. Last summer we were in Vegas and saw LOVE at the Mirage. I have a Beatles room in my house. Need I say I'm hooked?

Hi,Dennis! I enjoy your show immensely and I listen every Sunday morning at 10 on CKWW in Detroit-Windsor Ontario. The Hotrats' cover of "Drive My Car" was very good. There's another cut I've heard by them as well. They did the Beastie Boys'"Fight For Your Right To Party" in the style The Who in their mod days, circa 1967. 580AM is replaying your Beatles Breakup special tonight, so I'll tune in and listen.

The first song I ever heard of the Beatles was "Hey Jude" on 106.3 KLOO-FM during Breakfast With The Beatles and I've loved the Beatles ever since. My parents think it's odd that their 16 year old listens to music that's before their time but I love it. I just also wanted to let you know you're spreading Beatlemania to new generations. Thanks Dennis!

Does anyone know anything at all about the new song "Yoko Dear?" The artist is Eddie Davenport of New York. I heard it for the first time in January at the Fox Hollow and was blown away by it. Looking for any info whatsoever on the song or the artist. Thanks for a really great show. Breakfast With The Beatles is top shelf.

Dennis, thanks for a wonderful show. I've been a Beatles fan since 1965. I was 4 years old and I remember listening to "Meet the Beatles" and the love affair began then and there. The four Beatles don't get the recognition that's deserved in regards to their musicianship. All four were or are very good musicians. It's wonderful that both Paul and Ringo are still creating good and vital music; they aren't just older performers that are coasting on thier past.
